Creative Writing Ideas

Do you worry about where to find writing ideas? Or perhaps that you’ll run out of them? We used to be concerned about this until we opened our eyes and realised that ideas are all around us in an endless supply!

Eavesdrop

Listening to other people’s conversations perhaps while you’re on the bus, sitting in the park or even at work can sometimes spark an idea for a story.

During an interview about his book Your Heart Belongs to Me, bestselling author Dean Koontz said, “Story ideas have come to me from lines in songs, from a scrap of overheard conversation, from just about everywhere. And sometimes a story pops into my head, and I have no idea what the source of it was. Thank God this keeps happening; otherwise I might have to learn an honest trade like plumbing.”

Play the 'What If' Game

What if all rabbits were pink? What if there was no such thing as gravity? What if there was no such thing as money? What if men could have babies? You get the idea... Asking ‘What If’ questions can trigger a great idea for a story.

Follow the News

Admittedly I avoid the news when I can but reading the newspaper or watching the news can be a good source of writing ideas. Television shows use the news for storylines all the time.

Did you ever see the story about Paul Karason better known as the Blue Man or Papa Smurf? He was all over the news a couple of years ago for turning blue after using a silver preparation to treat a skin condition. Soon after this the TV series ER featured a storyline about a man who had turned blue. Case in point!

Make it New

Start with an old story and give it a new twist. This worked for Seth Grahame-Smith who ‘mashed up’ the Jane Austen classic Pride and Prejudice to create Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which sold over 4,000 copies before it even reached the shops.

Bethan Jones, UK spokesperson for the book said to the Guardian newspaper, "The idea of taking two completely separate, incongruous elements – Regency romance and zombies – you think it couldn't possibly work, but it's so intriguing and has really captured people's imaginations."

Where Children's Authors Get their Writing Ideas

'Story ideas come to me all the time, from every direction. I believe that everything and everyone on the planet has a story. It's just a question of looking for it. I get a lot of inspiration from the newspapers. And also from dreams.'
Anthony Horowitz

'Like most writers, I get them [ideas] from all over. Things I see, things I hear, things people tell me. Things which interest or concern me. Things I dream up. Things I read in other people's books. Things which just pop into my head from seemingly nowhere. And, of course, things which happened to me when I was young.'
Jean Ure

Ideas are everywhere. Enjoy harnessing then!
