Book Writing Software
The Pros
Book writing software can be a useful tool for helping you map the chronology of your book, organise your chapters and scenes, manage characters and locations. The open-source (which basically means free) software Storybook is described as a ’dynamic mind map.’ This can be a useful tool particularly if you work in a visual way as book writing programs usually let you assign colours to different characters and strands.
The Cons
There’s certainly a stigma attached to book writing software by a number of writers who feel that ‘real writers’ don’t need the aid of these programmes and that the programmes are designed to convince people that anyone can become a writer with the use of these tools, some of which even come up with plots. You could end up spending money that you just don’t need to shell out.
What we think
It’s true that if you have the talent to become a writer you can do so with the use of pen and paper or a basic word processing package. However, if you feel that book writing software might be a useful aid for you helping you to keep track of plots and characters then knock yourself out! There’s a number of packages available but consider, at least in the first instance, experimenting with
Storybook
or
yWriter
which won’t cost you a penny.
Programmes
There's a number of book writing software packages available. These are just a few:• Story Base • Power Structure • Power Writer • White Smoke • New Novelist • Wizards for Word • Prose Pro • Character Pro • Great Dialogue
