Book Summary
A book summary is something you’ll need to include when the time comes to send off your beloved work (or some of your beloved work – remember to check the guidelines!) to an Agent.
It should contain the most important parts of your story and no more. It should be short and concise whilst giving the best representation of your plot. The reader should get a flavour of your main characters and a clear idea of the main story.
It is this along with a sample of your work that will determine whether or not you’ll get that all-important, so-desired call from an Agent that we all strive for, asking to see more of your manuscript so you’ll want to get it right.
You may want to start by listing and describing your main characters. This will mean the reader is more familiar with them when they read the plot. We all know that stories have a beginning, a middle and an end and this is essentially what the summary is – describing these three elements.
Introduce the start of the story – what’s happening? How are your characters affected? What does this lead on to? Go on to describe the middle – are there any particular important moments to mention? And lastly, how is the plot resolved and what does this mean for your characters?
Once you’ve drafted your summary, go over it and check for any errors. Proofread and edit as you see fit. It’s always worth asking someone else to look over it for you just in case you’ve missed any mistakes.
Congratulations, your summary is now complete!
